Bahamian artist Tavares Strachan collaborates with London’s Royal Academy of Arts to present his latest public sculpture, “The First Supper (Galaxy Black)” (2023), as part of the ongoing exhibition, “Entangled Pasts, 1768-now.” The sculpture, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” features 12 Black historical figures, including Harriet Tubman, Matthew Henson, Shirley Chisholm, and Haile Selassie I.
Positioned in the institution’s courtyard, the artwork challenges traditional narratives, prompting reflection on a past centered on diverse perspectives. Strachan’s eclectic practice, spanning neon signage to marble sculptures, aims to explore the intersections of art, science, history, and politics, addressing themes of colonialism and the Black experience. “Entangled Pasts, 1768-now” will be on display in London until April 28.
